April 13, 2023 - Calpine & Clean power alliance ink deals to bring more geothermal power to southern california
The Geysers Power Company, LLC, an indirect subsidiary of Calpine Corporation, has signed two new long-term agreements to provide a total of 118 megawatts (MW) of renewable, geothermal power to Clean Power Alliance (CPA) in Southern California. The new agreements will expand access to clean, reliable energy in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.
“Calpine is proud to help Clean Power Alliance bring reliable, clean, and affordable energy to families and businesses across Southern California,” said Calpine’s Gevan Reeves, Vice President of Origination. “Calpine was founded nearly 40 years ago on principles of sustainability, and our latest agreements reflect our continuous focus on innovative solutions for a low-carbon future, from geothermal energy to carbon capture and grid-connected storage.”
Under the new power purchase agreements with CPA, Calpine will add 100 MW of existing generation over 10 years to a previous 50 MW agreement. Separately, it will provide CPA another 18 MW in new, incremental geothermal generation over 20 years.
“This expansion of our partnership with Calpine’s Geysers Power Company will provide much needed round-the-clock clean energy to our many residential and commercial customers,” said Matthew Langer Clean Power Alliance’s Chief Operating Officer. “Geothermal resources are currently scarce. We plan to add more in the coming years to further increase our renewable energy portfolio and help communities reach their climate goals.”
Located north of San Francisco, The Geysers is the single largest geothermal electrical operation in the world. A geothermal resource occurs when water deep below the earth’s surface is heated by exposure to hot, porous and permeable rock resulting in dry steam or hot water. At The Geysers, steam is collected and piped overland to a network of interconnected power plants where it spins conventional steam turbines that drive generators to produce clean, reliable electricity for California.
